Devotees believe that an understanding of the influence of the planets and stars on earthly affairs allows them to both predict and affect the destinies of individuals, groups, and nations. Though often regarded as a science throughout its history, astrology is widely considered today to be absolutely opposed to the findings and theories of modern Western. When did people start using it? a) The actual history of the start of astrology has been lost in time. But there are cave drawings dating back 25,000 years with moon and sun orientations. What were the people using it trying to do? a) The point of Astrology back in the old days varied. Some used to predict the seasons while others used to predict an individuals predetermined path in life. Carl Jung: 1) When was he working? a) Reading through Jung’s history it seems like he was working from a very young age trying to understand people and what influenced their behavior. From trying to understand how his father was losing faith to his mother’s depression. For actual work he started in 1900 at the psychiatric hospital Burgholzli in Zurich, Switzerland. Between several different hospitals, teaching, and authoring countless publications he worked until his death after a short illness in 1961 at the age of 85. 2) Who was his mentor? a) I did not see a clear cut mentor. I read about many influences including Freud throughout his life. It seems that he had an incredible drive within to understand his as well as others subconscious. Freud did consider Jung to be an adopted elder son since they both thrived from each other’s work. Until Jung disagreed with Freud’s point of human behavior comes or is driven from sexuality where Jung believed to be subconsciously driven. This started a falling out that they never recovered from. 3) What concepts did he introduce and develop in his career? a) The concept of introversion and extraversion, the concept of the complex, the concept of the collective unconscious-shared by all people to include the archetypes, and synchronicity as a mode of relationship that is not causal. 4) What is Analytical Psychology? It is the balance between the conscious and subconscious parts of a personality as we strive for wholeness. We strive to a healthier life as we try to make ourselves greater. This is accomplished by studying and interpreting our dreams. Katharine Briggs / Isabel Myers: 1) When were they working? a) Katherine Briggs started her research into personality in 1917. After Carl Jungs published work was translated into English in 1923, Katharine realized their work was similar but Jung went into much more detail. In 1919 Isabel daughter of Katharine graduated at the head of her class from Swarthmore College. Isabel worked for a personnel manager at a large Philadelphia bank, who taught her the analytic skills of test construction, scoring, validation and statistics. In 1942 the Briggs-Myers Type Indicator was created, and the Briggs Myers Type Indicator Handbook was published in 1944 where it changed it to Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). 2) What influential development did they produce? a) They produced the MBTI. The personality inventory is to make the theory of psychological types understandable and useful in people’s lives. The theory is, that much seemingly random variation in the behavior is actually quite orderly and consistent, being due to basic differences in the ways individuals prefer to use their perception and judgment. 3) What is its use? a) The MBTI Test is used in the areas of career counseling, team building, group dynamics, professional development, marketing, family business, leadership training, executive coaching, life coaching, personal development and marriage counseling. 4) What theory/theories did they base their development on?
